Issue no. 12 Spring / Summer 2026 Margaret Street, Toowoomba

Gloss & Co., hair and colour studio, Toowoomba

Lived-in colour and quietly brilliant cuts, from a sunlit studio at the top of Margaret Street. We do the slow, careful kind of hair: the kind that still looks good in week nine.

i. A studio, not a line

Upstairs on Margaret Street, behind an arched window that catches the afternoon light, we run four chairs and one basin bay. No conveyor belt and no upsell at the basin: just a long consult, colour mixed by the gram, and a cut that suits how you actually live.

"We book fewer clients a day than most salons in town. That's the point."

Mara Whitlock, founder
A stylist in a brown work apron cutting a client's wet, dark hair between her fingers.
Cut dry first, wet second.

iii. Four chairs

Everyone here has done at least a decade of hair. Hover or tab through to meet them; the chair you pick carries through to the booking.

Mara, a woman with a short platinum crop, standing with her arms crossed beside a salon mirror.

Mara Whitlock

Founder & colour director

Sixteen years behind the chair, eleven of them in Brisbane and London before she came home to Toowoomba. See Mara for colour corrections, grey transitions and the blonde you've been too nervous to ask for.

"Your hair should look expensive in week nine, not just on day one."

Book with Mara
Mateo, a man with dark swept-back hair in a black roll-neck, holding a pair of scissors.

Mateo Rivas

Senior stylist & cutter

Precision bobs, short cuts and the cleanest skin fade on the Range. Mateo trained in Melbourne and cuts dry first, wet second, so the shape suits how you actually wear it.

"A good cut is the one you can do yourself on a Tuesday."

Book with Mateo
Sophie, a woman with her hair in a high bun, wearing a brown shirt and work apron, holding up scissors.

Sophie Dunn

Balayage specialist

Sophie paints freehand, with no foils unless they earn their place: soft, sun-caught blonde, and the copper that has had half of Toowoomba asking this spring.

"I paint for the grow-out, not the photo."

Book with Sophie
Elsie, a woman with long blonde hair, standing behind a styling chair in front of a large round mirror.

Elsie Barrow

Bridal & occasion

More than three hundred brides, from garden weddings in Highfields to winery mornings out on the Downs. Soft, undone up-dos that last through the speeches and the dance floor.

"If it moves when you laugh, it's right."

Book with Elsie
Long, loosely waved hair in a pearly, hand-painted blonde balayage, seen from the side.
Shown: pearl blonde, painted by Sophie.

iv. The colour bar

The eight shades we're mixing most this season. Each is only a starting point: we tune it to your skin, your eyes and whatever your last box dye did.

Oxblood Velvet

Deep cherry-brown with a red that only shows up in the sun. Gentle on dark bases, no bleach needed.
